While we serve all patients for their primary care or medical eye care needs, we are ultimately a family practice. Examining children and special needs patients can be tricky and unpredictable, so we encourage you to plan to be here for up to 2 hours for a comprehensive exam. Follow-up appointments, if needed, typically run 30-45 minutes. If you are coming in with multiple family members, we recommend adding 30 minutes for each person.
For infants and toddlers, try to avoid planning your visit during their regular naptime so we can see them when they are alert and happy. It may also be a good idea to bring along some snacks or a favorite toy.
If the patient has behavioral difficulties or special needs, we welcome the opportunity to serve you! If you anticipate an extended exam duration due to reduced cooperation, comprehension, responsiveness, or mobility, please let us know in advance so we can accommodate you.
As a courtesy to our patients, we give a reminder call on the business day before your exam. In the event that you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we appreciate a call as far in advance as possible. This allows us to best serve our patients without charging any fees, as we do have a strict No-Show Policy.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete our registration forms and confirm your insurance coverage. For your convenience, you may print these forms here and complete them at home.
Preparing for Dilation
Dilation of the eyes is necessary for two purposes: first, it enables us to check for abnormalities inside the eye for both adults and children; second, and more importantly for kids, it relaxes the focusing muscle in the eye which helps us determine the most appropriate glasses prescription. All children are subject to the same dilation solution. We do have other solutions to meet both the doctor’s and adult patient’s needs for a comprehensive exam.
After dilation, you/your child will temporarily be more sensitive to bright sunlight. We will provide disposable sunglasses, but it may be beneficial to bring a hat or sunglasses from home. In addition, you/your child will experience blurry vision that is more noticeable up close than far away. The effects for children will last for the rest of the day and can rarely persist up to 36 hours; and a few hours for adults. During this time you may return to regular activities keeping these affects in mind.

Verifying your Insurance
Please bring your current insurance card to each appointment and any other information that may be important to billing your insurance. Be sure to verify your vision-specific coverage before your exam as it may differ from your medical insurance. Please keep in mind that it is ultimately your responsibility to know the full extent of your insurance coverage. If you have any questions regarding your vision coverage or if you do not see your insurance listed on our website, you may contact your insurance provider directly.
If you do not have vision insurance or if we do not take your vision plan, you may be eligible to have the exam covered under your medical insurance depending on the diagnoses found in the exam. You may contact our billing department to determine how your exam could potentially be billed.
If your insurance requires a referral from your primary care provider, please verify that a referral authorization has been faxed or sent to our office prior to your appointment before scheduling your appointment.
Payment is due at the time of service for non-covered services. Co-payments are collected at check-in. If you need to make alternative arrangements feel free to contact us prior to your appointment.
